In the autumn of 2015, when the flow of migrants begun to increase dramatically and the pressure on the European external border was too high, EU heads of State or Government realized that was essential to strengthen their cooperation with Turkey in order to respond to the unprecedented refugee crisis. In this regard, by engaging the Republic of Turkey in the management of the mixed migration flows, the EU has given priority to a security-based approach at the expense of the human rights of migrants and refugees. The present work remarks that the prevalence of security policies aimed at preventing third country nationals from entering the EU have negatively affected the human rights of migrants, including those in need of international protection.
